The Interventions

The interventions in each building include:

Indoor Basketball court:

  • Building envelope insulation. The technology of external thermal insulation contributes to the reduction of the building's consumption for heating and cooling, while protecting the walls from moisture and reducing the heat-island effect. External thermal insulation has advantages over internal insulation in terms of the elimination of thermal bridges, the availability of internal space and greater energy savings. External thermal insulation offers additional renovation of the building’s exterior and contributes to the energy upgrade.
  • Replacement of oil boiler with Heat Pump and installation of fan coil units. Heat pump technology is installed in any type of building, even in cases of buildings with radiator heating systems. With the heat pump we have a reduction in heating costs of up to 60% with at the same time a reduction in CO2 emissions by 50% compared to conventional oil heating. However, the same equipment can also produce cooling in summer provided that fan coils are installed. In this case we have heating in winter, cooling in summer and domestic hot water with a single system. The relatively high initial capital required for the installation can be recovered quite quickly due to the high efficiency of the unit, while the effort to use renewable energy sources and reduce emissions is enhanced.
  • Replacement of frames with new energy frames. The technology of energy frames includes thermal break aluminium profiles and low-e energy glazing. Thermal break is important when it comes to metal framing systems as it blocks and stops the flow of heat, keeping the space at the desired temperatures. Low-E coatings have been developed to minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared radiation that can pass through the glass without affecting the amount of light transmitted. With this technology, frames can achieve U-values as low as under 1, offering energy savings to the building, reduced air conditioning/heating costs, resistance to extreme weather conditions, low air permeability and sound insulation.
  • Replacement of luminaires with new LED technology. The technology is a relatively new technology in lighting with many advantages over traditional lighting technologies. The main advantage is that it offers very high Energy Efficiency. This means that about 80% of the electricity is converted into light, while about 20% is lost and converted into other forms of energy such as heat. The second main advantage is that they are 100% ecological and safe, unlike conventional fluorescent luminaires which contain a lot of materials, such as mercury, which are hazardous to the environment. In addition, LED luminaires are 100% recyclable, and all their materials can be easily reused.

Indoor swimming pool:

  • Installation of a Hybrid Heat Pump for central air conditioning, heating and DHW supply. A hybrid heating-cooling system is defined as a system that combines individual sub-systems of thermal energy production to make the most of the benefits of any technology. One such product is the low-temperature split-type hybrid heat pump with a gas condensing boiler mounted in the indoor unit. So, with this heating system, even more economical operation can be ensured for space heating. The user has the possibility to enter the electricity and gas unit prices in the hybrid pump. Based on the data collected from the respective sensors, it decides which of the two modes is economically beneficial for the user and more environmentally friendly in relation to the environmental criteria installed in its operating system. The high level of energy efficiency offered by the heat pump operation is considered a Renewable Energy Source, based on the energy unit prices in force in Greece.
  • Replacement of conventional lighting with new LED technology.
  • Installation of an automation system to control the building's consumption. A BEMS system will be installed together with sensors, which will automate some of the building's functions (central air conditioning, lighting, etc.) in order to reduce energy waste and achieve maximum energy efficiency. Building Energy Management System (BEMS) technology is a valuable tool for achieving optimum comfort conditions for users and operation for devices as well as for optimizing the energy consumption of the building. The use of sensors and automation results in real-time energy savings, and there is also the possibility of recording data. BEMS can also trigger alarms, in some cases predicting problems and informing maintenance schedules.

Indoor sports shooting facility:

  • Replacement of a conventional boiler with a 50 kW heat pump with fan coils.
  • Replacement of lighting fixtures with LED technology.
  • Building envelope insulation with 7cm thick extruded polystyrene plates.
  • Installation of an Electric Vehicle Charging Station with 10 kWp PV capacity.

The project's interventions significantly improve the living standards of the local residents. The provision of appropriate sports facilities in the buildings will directly contribute to the improvement of their living standards and at the same time save resources that can be used to support programmes for vulnerable social groups.
